Don't underestimate external injuries! Be cautious of three symptoms of tetanus infection.

2023 - 03 - 01 Health News

As mountains and forests open up, more and more people are heading into the outdoors, and tetanus has become something you must know about! The Taiwan Food and Drug Administration posted on its Facebook "Guarding the Beginning and End of Drug Use" that tetanus is a disease caused by the tetanus bacterium and can present with three symptoms: stiffness and spasms in all limbs and the body, difficulty opening the mouth, and difficulty swallowing. Vaccination is the best way to prevent tetanus.

The Food and Drug Administration explains that tetanus is a disease caused by the tetanus bacterium, with an incubation period of about 3-21 days, generally 8 days, and most cases occur 14 days after infection. Symptoms often manifest in muscle spasms, including stiffness and spasms in all limbs and the body, difficulty opening the mouth, and difficulty swallowing. Tetanus is transmitted through contact with contaminated soil, animals, human feces, or rusty metal objects via a wound. The most effective way to prevent tetanus is vaccination and proper wound care.

The Food and Drug Administration points out that the tetanus vaccine is a toxoid vaccine. In Taiwan, infants and young children have been receiving a five-in-one vaccine since 2010, which includes tetanus, and an additional dose of a mixed vaccine containing tetanus is given before elementary school. The protection lasts for 10 years after complete vaccination. Those who are at high risk of getting tetanus after more than 10 years must be vaccinated again to prevent infection.

If you suspect that you have tetanus, what should you do? The Food and Drug Administration advises that if you experience any suspicious symptoms, seek medical attention immediately, and inform the doctor of any contact with soil, animals, or human feces, or rusty metal objects.
